How to Apply TK54 Concrete Floor Coating

Cleaning:

  • As with all coating /painting projects, the preparation of the area to be coated is the most important step to assure proper adhesion.
  • The substrate should be dry and clean, free of dirt, dust, wax, soap, oil, gasoline, diesel, grease, flaking rust /paint, release agents, or any other contaminants.
  • Clean with citrus based degreasers before application.
  • Rinse thoroughly and allow enough time to dry.
  • Test for adhesion in a small inconspicuous area before applying a larger area.

New Concrete:

  • Concrete should be completely cured before coating.
  • Depending on temp, humidity and air movement, this will take at least 30 days.
  • Test dryness before coating.

Old Concrete:

  • Un-coated concrete is very porous and can absorb contaminants ie oil, diesel, wax etc.
  • Preferably use a power washer.
  • Test heavily soiled areas for adhesion.
  • You might have to repeat the cleaning process in oily /greasy areas.

Coated Concrete:

  • Clean surface from contaminants.
  • Check original coating for adhesion and flaking.
  • If the original coating has poor adhesion, it should be removed before applying TK 54.
  • If the original coating is smooth and shiny, lightly sand the surface before application.

Wood:

  • Wood is porous and should be dry and clean before applying.
  • Fill holes with waterborne putty.
  • Clean decks, plywood, OSB, MDS etc. with a waterborne degreaser to remove oily and grease contaminants.
  • Preferably use a power washer.
  • Test heavily soiled areas for adhesion.
  • You might have to repeat the cleaning process in oily /greasy areas.
  • Allow wood to dry before application.

Tile:

  • Rough and porous tile should be dry and clean, free of dirt, dust, wax, soap, oil, gasoline, diesel, grease or any other contaminants.
  • Glossy tile should be cleaned first, then sanded with 80 grit sandpaper to promote adhesion.
  • Rinse and dry.

Fiberglass:

  • Clean surface thoroughly before sanding with 220 grit sandpaper.
  • Rinse and dry.

Metal:

  • New metal might be contaminated with transit coating or oils from machining.
  • Degrease before application.
  • Old metals, clean and remove rust and flaking paint to provide a solid substrate.
  • Aluminum and galvanized, clean and sand lightly to dull the surface and increase adhesion.
  • Metal Preparation Video

Applying:

  • Apply only when temperature is above 60 F and the humidity above 40 %.
  • Always test coating in an inconspicuous place to check adhesion.
  • Allow proper drying time before testing.
  • No Mixing, shaking, stirring or thinning required.
  • Apply in minimum 2 thick coats with provided roller.
  • To obtain maximum protection and longevity of TK 54, cover 48 ft2 with 1 gallon of product.
  • Let the roller do the work, do not push too hard.
  • Allow the first coat to dry to the touch (1 to 3 hours depending on temp, humidity and air movement) before applying the second coat.

Drying:

  • Dry time will differ and depends on the ambient temperature, humidity and air movement.
  • A slow moving fan will drastically increase drying times.
  • Do not expose coating to temperatures below 60°F during the application and the curing process.
  • At 77°F and RH 55%, the coating will be dry to touch after 1-2 hours,
  • After 6 hours only light foot traffic is recommended.
  • 72 hours after application the coating will be fully cured.
  • Allow the coating to fully cure before exposing to water, cold weather and heavy traffic.

Storage and Safety Precautions:

  • Do not freeze and do not store in direct sun.
  • Use only outdoors or in a well ventilated area.
  • Use proper protective eye wear/clothing.
  • See SDS for the latest safety precautions.
  • Unopened container: 1 year shelf life stored between 40-75°F.
  • Opened container: up to 6 month shelf life if stored between 40-75°F.

Warranty and Claims

When properly applied to a contaminant free substrate, as per Application Instructions, TK54 will increase the coefficient of friction of the surface. If the recommended cleaning procedures are followed and the surface is free of contaminants, this increase will last for a minimum of two years.

The manufacturer will, at its option, replace any product that loses this increase in the coefficient of friction within the 2-year warranty period. The warranty starts at the date of purchase and applies only to the coating. Neither Seller nor Manufacturer shall be held liable for any injury, loss or damage direct or consequential, arising from the use or inability to use the coating.

Before application, the customer should determine the suitability of the coating for the intended use. The customer assumes all risk and liability whatsoever in connection with the application. TK54 Concrete Floor Coating can make the surface more slip resistant but cannot make a surface slip free.

Slip and Fall accidents can still happen, even after proper application.
